Q. My child is riding the bus from the airport to camp. How does this work?
A. A camp representative will meet the airport delegation of campers at baggage claim and escort them to the bus. Once on the bus, camp staff will provide a short safety orientation. All staff and campers will be expected to abide by the bus company's safety procedures and rules. Should changes to reservations occur (delayed flights, emergencies, etc.) the Youth Assistant will communicate with camper chaperones.
Q. Will there be a snack bar?
A. Yes, the canteen (snack bar) will be available on a scheduled basis and campers will be limited on the number of items they can choose per day. Items are free and campers will not need to bring money with them to camp.
Q. Can my child bring a cell phone or can I call them?
A. Because of the camp activities and to try to reduce homesickness, we ask that you refrain from calling during the camp session. The camp staff will call you if necessary. We discourage children from bringing cell phones to camp as they often cause a disruption and may also be damaged, lost or stolen. If you feel that your child must have a cell phone with them, it is best if it is given to the Camp Director at the beginning of the camp and then returned at the end of the camp. In the event of an emergency, please call Jeff at 916-764-8880 or Maryellen at 916-990-1084.
Q. Can I visit my child?
A. Because of a full day of scheduled camp activities we try to limit the amount of disruptions to the camper's schedule. If you need to speak to your child in person, please contact the camp staff to schedule a time.
Q. Can I send my child mail?
A. Yes, we encourage mail and it can be sent to the attention of your child at the address below. Please note that mail
takes 2-3 days to reach camp and should be mailed no later than the first day of camp.
Q. What is the purpose of Camp Homelani?
A. Camp Homelani is operated by the Salvation Army to provide a healthy week of social, recreational, and spiritual activities for children. We want campers to see God's handiwork through nature and to learn more about the love of God through their camping experience.
Q. What kind of activities will there be?
A. Days at camp will include Club Bible, swimming, crafts, sports, cabin activities, and great food.
Q. What if there are behavioral problems while at camp?
A. Our Camp Staff will do the best we can to resolve issues. For the safety of other campers, if we are unable to resolve the matter, we may have to send the child home. Unless there is a serious incident, we will be in contact with parents/guardians by phone before any decision is made.
Q. Can a camper leave camp whenever they want?
A. Campers are not permitted to leave without special permission from the Camp Director. Parents or guardians must write a note if a camper needs to leave camp early or if someone other than the parent/guardian will be picking up a camper. This must be cleared before the start of the camp session.
Q. When can campers go to the beach and swim?
A. There will be plenty of scheduled swim time at the beach. No one is allowed in or near the ocean, except at the scheduled swim times when a lifeguard is present.
Q. What happens if a camper has to take medicine or if they get sick?
A. Our healthcare provider will hold all medicine from the first day of camp and will follow all prescriptions. If a camper becomes ill, we will notify a parent/guardian immediately. If, after first aid and/or treatment, is administered and no progress is seen, we will send the camper home. If a camper is hurt or ill before camp starts, we strongly discourage you from coming to camp, unless they can fully participate in ALL activities.
Q. How late can campers stay up at night?
A. At 9:15 pm camper will be asked to go to their cabin for "Call to Cabins." After devotions, the lights will be turned off
and a quiet time must be observed for all campers. It is important to get as much rest as possible.
Q. Can campers go into a friend's cabin?
A. All campers must respect other people's space. If a camper is not assigned to a cabin, whether girls, boys, or staff, they should not be in that cabin. If a camper is the same age as a friend, they can ask to be assigned the same cabin, and we will try to accommodate this.
Q. While the camper is at camp, do they have to listen to the staff members?
A. Yes, the staff at Camp Homelani is in place to care for the campers. Instructions are given to help this to be the best possible experience for all campers. We ask that all campers please cooperate with all staff members. The camp staff must care for many children and if one child persistently abuses the rules, we will send them home.
